How is an Elvish last name formed?
In Sindarin, a family or house is called a noss. A family name doesn't come from a trade or an ancestor, as ours often do, but from a place or a people. You take a root (the forest, the moon, the river) and add one of these endings:
- -dor: "land". Taurdor, land of the forest.
- -rim: "people", hence "kin". Elenrim, kin of the stars.
- -lond: "haven". Sîrlond, haven of the river.
- -nor: "realm". Ithnor, realm of the moon.
- -ost: "citadel". Mithost, citadel of the grey mist.
- -noss: "house, family". Lothnoss, house of the flowers.
The generator picks the root from the first letter of your last name: a Smith gets a family line in Sûl- or Sîr-. Every root is explained in the Elvish dictionary.
An elf first and last name for your MMORPG character
More and more online games ask for a first name and a last name for every character. Often the combination of both must be unique, and once chosen it can't be changed, so it helps to have several ideas ready.
Type your first and last name in the generator on the home page: it then gives you an Elvish family name of your own and six first + last name combinations, each using plain letters only, with no accents, spaces or numbers, and 12 letters at most. If the first combination is taken, the next ones keep the same meaning.
On RP (roleplay) servers, names must sound like a believable character name. Elvish names with a real meaning are perfect for that.
Frequently asked questions
How do I translate my last name into Elvish?
Type your last name in the field at the top of the page. Your last name becomes an Elvish family name that starts, when possible, with the same letter, with its meaning: "land of the forest", "kin of the stars"…
Do elves really have last names?
In the stories, elves are often named after their father or their people rather than a fixed family name. A family name like these is a style choice, perfect for a game or novel character.
Can I keep my first name and only take an Elvish last name?
Of course. Many players keep their real first name or usual gamer tag and add an Elvish family name after it.
