How your syllable becomes an Elvish name

Your syllable is placed in two ways. At the start, it gets an Elvish ending that says who you are: -iel (daughter), -tári (queen), -hír (lord), -aran (king)… At the end, it follows an Elvish root that gives it a meaning: Elen- (star), Taur- (forest), Nim- (snow)…

If two vowels clash, or a letter repeats where the two parts meet, the maker drops one so the name flows.

Tips for a syllable that sounds Elvish

      Why are some letters missing?

The Elvish languages don't use every letter of our alphabet. There is no J, no K (Elvish writes c, always pronounced "k"), and no Q, X or Z. Other letters like P, U, V, W or Y exist, but very few useful words for names start with them.

If your name starts with one of these letters, take the closest-sounding one (C for a K, G or D for a J, S for a Z), or keep your letter by typing it as a syllable above: "Kal", "Zed" or "Jo" work great.

      Frequently asked questions

Can I put my nickname in my Elvish name?

Yes, that's what it's for. Type your nickname or part of your name: you get Elvish names that contain it, at the start or at the end, each with its meaning.

Does my syllable mean anything in Elvish?

It keeps whatever meaning you give it. The Elvish ending or root that is added brings the meaning: "Kaliel" reads as "daughter of Kal", "Elenkal" as "Kal of the stars".

What if I don't have a syllable in mind?

Use the generator on the home page with your first name, or draw ideas from the female and male elf names.

How do I find an Elvish name with the same first letter as my name?

Pick the first letter of your name and the name form (female, male or last name): Elvish names starting with that letter appear, with their meanings. Click "More names" for new ones.

Which letter has the most Elvish names?

A, D, E, G, L, M, N and R are the richest letters, because several Elvish roots start with them: Anor (sun), Elen (star), Gil (star), Loth (flower), Mír (jewel), Nim (snow), Ruin (flame)…
