How is a male elf name built?
Just like female names, you start from a root that carries the meaning (the forest, fire, a star) and add an ending that says who he is:
- -dir: "man", hence "hero" in names. Taurdir, hero of the forest.
- -ion: "son of…". Ithion, son of the moon.
- -hír: "lord". Calhír, lord of the light.
- -aran: "king". Anoraran, king of the sun.
- -thor: "eagle". Eredthor, eagle of the mountains.
- -randir: "wanderer". Sûlrandir, wanderer of the wind.
Neutral endings give quieter names, perfect for a scout or a bard: -las (leaf), -mir (jewel), -dil (friend), -beth (word). Every one of these words is explained in the Elvish dictionary.
Choosing the right name for your elf
- Start from his role. A warrior sounds right with Bel- (strength), Ost- (fortress) or Ruin- (flame), a ranger with Taur-, Orn- or Ered-, a mage with Hîth-, Mith- or Gil-.
- Pick the ending by rank. -aran for a king, -hír for a lord or a guild leader, -ion for an heir, -dir for a hero, -randir for a ranger, -thor for an archer or a scout.
- Think about your gamer tag. For an online game, drop the accents: Narhir rather than Narhír.
- Keep a few in reserve. If your first choice is taken, a name with the same root keeps the same meaning.
