Elvish names · FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How your Elvish name is created, how to use it as a gamer tag or character name, and where to find more ideas.

Is this a real translation of my name?

Not strictly. A name like Emma or Liam has no equivalent in the Elvish languages. The generator builds an Elvish name from the letters of your name, using real roots inspired by Sindarin and Quenya, the two great Elvish languages of fantasy literature.

How does the Elvish name generator work?

The generator takes your first name and removes accents and capitals. It then picks an Elvish root that starts, when possible, with the same letter as your name: Emma becomes a name in Elen-, Eär- or Ered-, Liam a name in Loth-, Lin- or Laur-. Finally it adds an ending based on the form you chose: -iel, -wen or -eth for a feminine name, -dir, -ion or -hír for a masculine name, and neutral endings like -dil (friend) or -las (leaf). Every root has a meaning, so your Elvish name reads like a short phrase: Elenwen means "maiden of the stars", Taurdir "hero of the forest". Every root and its meaning is in the Elvish dictionary.

Do I always get the same name?

Yes. The same name with the same form (feminine, masculine or neutral) always gives the same Elvish name, on any device. You can find it again or show it to your friends.

Can I use my Elvish name as a gamer tag?

Yes, that's what it's for. The suggested gamer tags have no accents or spaces, so most video games, MMORPGs, Discord servers and streaming platforms accept them. If one is taken, try the version with a number or with the meaning of the root.

What are the usual rules for a character name?

In most MMORPGs, a character name uses letters only, with no numbers, spaces or symbols, and 12 letters at most. Some games also ask for a last name, and the combination of both must be unique. The combinations suggested here follow these common rules, but each game has the final say: some words are filtered.

How do I find an Elvish name for my roleplaying character?

Type your character's name, or your own, then switch the name form. You get three different names, each with its meaning, which helps you imagine your elf's backstory.

Is the generator free?

Yes, it's free with no sign-up. Your name is never sent anywhere: everything runs directly in your browser.

How do I translate my last name into Elvish?

Type it in the generator on the home page, next to your first name, or use the Elvish last names page to translate your last name on its own. You get a family name with its meaning, like "land of the forest" or "kin of the stars".

Where can I find more Elvish words?

The Elvish dictionary gathers 187 Sindarin and Quenya words by theme, with pronunciation and a few phrases.
