Choosing an Elvish name for your child
- Say it out loud with your last name. An Elvish first name pairs best with a short surname; with a long one, pick a two-syllable name like Nimeth or Calion.
- Think about spelling. The names suggested here have no accents: they are spelled as they sound and work on every official form.
- Pick a meaning that moves you. The stars for a baby born at night, the sea for a family of sailors, flowers for a spring baby.
- Keep it wearable at any age. Avoid names that are too long or too "fantasy character": your child will still carry it at 40.
How Elvish names sound
In Elvish, c is always a hard "k" (Celebion sounds like "KEH-leb-ee-on"), th is said as in "thin", and every vowel is pronounced, even at the end. The endings -wen, -iel and -eth make girl names, -ion and -dir make boy names. Every root is explained in the Elvish dictionary.
