About
A small site made by a gamer, because her favourite site had disappeared.
Why this site
My name is Sybille, and I've been gaming for years. Every new character came with the same ritual: visiting a site that translated names into Elvish. One day it disappeared, and I never found anything as lovely. So I made my own, free and with no sign-up.
Where the names come from
Each name joins a root and an ending. These words come from Sindarin and Quenya, the two great Elvish languages of fantasy literature, and I checked them against lexicons published by enthusiasts. The names themselves are invented: this is a game, not a scholarly translation. The Elvish dictionary shows every word used.
Your name stays with you
Your name is worked out directly in your browser: what you type is never sent or stored. The site runs on advertising, and everything is explained on the Privacy page.
An idea, a mistake?
A name that sounds off, a root to add, a clumsy translation? Write to me at [email protected].
